Local press play a vital role
18th March 2009
It is with great concern that I note that Archant Norfolk are considering cutting 54 editorial posts, which could see the enforced departure of some important and highly regarded senior journalists.
The Lowestoft Journal, the Beccles and Bungay Journal and the Eastern Daily Press play a vital role in providing important, detailed and well-researched news stories from and for the local community. The proposed cutbacks can only have a negative impact on the quality of news and this would be a great shame and a disservice to the area.
The provision of a high quality local news service is something that we have enjoyed in East Anglia for many years. Local radio is more popular than ever and these titles have loyal readerships with whom they have a strong relationship. Similar cutbacks in the local and editorial content of Anglia TV have actually worsened ITV's financial plight and I urge Archant to reconsider their position.
