Unitary Authority Proposals
8th July 2008
The Boundary Committee's proposals for unitary local government in Suffolk provide Waveney with a double-whammy. The needs and concerns of Lowestoft would be lost in Norfolk in a giant authority serving close on 900,000 people, whilst Beccles, Bungay and the villages in the south would be part of an authority stretching from Kessingland to Newmarket. It would be very difficult, if not impossible, for those running services across the two areas to have a full knowledge and understanding of the communities that they serve.
There is real concern about the democratic vacuum in which this whole process is taking place, with the Boundary Committee largely ignoring the representations put to them by elected councils, interest groups and individuals, who have a better understanding of the towns and villages they serve.
The Government has instigated a costly and unnecessary review for which there is no public demand at a time when they should be working with local councils to provide better services
