Yartoft

Sir
Instead of instigating a costly and unwanted review of local government arrangements in Suffolk that will lead to months of uncertainty with costs being incurred that would be better spent on essential services, the Government should be investing in the upgrading of flood defences both on the A12 at Blythburgh and in Lowestoft itself. These works would have a much more beneficial impact on the Waveney and Lowestoft economy than the creation of a sub-regional hybrid [Yartoft] that would weaken local identities and lead to an expensive and unnecessary upheaval of local government, for which there is no evidence that there would be any benefit.
The Government should compensate Waveney District Council, Suffolk County Council and the other authorities in the County for the time that they have wasted, at the Government's instigation, in working up the now irrelevant Pathfinder scheme and the unitary bid for Ipswich. If they do not, it will be the Council Tax payer who will foot the bill for their incompetence.
