On 7th March, Peter Aldous became a BBC Radio Suffolk Hedgehog Champion.

BBC Radio Suffolk are making Suffolk the first hedgehog friendly county in the UK, using imaginative ideas to make the public aware of the plight of hedgehogs.

In the 1950s there were around 36 million hedgehogs, but unfortunately there are less than 1 million today.

There are, however, a number of ways to help hedgehogs. Given that they can travel around a mile each night and that their home consists of around 20 hectares, creating a small 13cm hole in your fence can allow them to travel across their habitat to find food and mates.

Furthermore, leaving piles of logs and leaves make great homes from for them, whilst slug pellets are dangerous. In fact, they eat more than 100 slugs and beetles each night, so hedgehogs are a great natural alternative to pellets.
