Waveney MP Peter Aldous today encouraged World War 2 veterans in the Waveney Constituency to apply for the Heroes Return 2 scheme which provides Lottery funding to help World War II veterans who saw active service and are resident in the UK or the Republic of Ireland to take part in commemorative visits to mark the anniversary of events that led to the end of WWII.

WWII veterans may be accompanied by a spouse and/or a carer. Widows and widowers of WWII veterans are also eligible.

Applicants can apply for a fixed grant of between £150 and £5,500 depending on the number of people taking part and the destination. These amounts are set so that there is enough money to cover the cost of travel and insurance.

Trips must be taken by the end of 2010, but veterans who have already taken trips but were unaware of Heroes Return can apply for retrospective funding until January 2011.

So far over 10,000 people have been awarded funding totaling over £7 million to return to places including Italy, France, Greece, Holland, Germany, USA, the Far East and Australia, as well as to make trips within the UK.

Mr Aldous said:

“We owe a great debt of gratitude to the veterans of World War 2, without whom we may not have the freedoms we take for granted today. I encourage any veterans who saw active service in World War 2 and who would like to make commemorate visits, to apply for the funding they so well deserve before time runs out!”
