Waveney MP Peter Aldous is campaigning against the closure of the HSBC Bank on Bridge Street in Oulton Broad. The bank which provides a vital service to people in the area will close at 3.30pm on Friday 19th November 2010.

HSBC wrote to Oulton Broad customers on Monday 23rd August 2010, inviting them to discuss the closure with branch staff and talk through the many alternative banking channels open to them. Customers will have the administration of their accounts transferred to the Lowestoft branch.

Mr Aldous will be meeting with Graham Hodgkins, Regional PFS Director for HSBC on 7th October to discuss the closure and investigate what options HSBC has considered, including whether an ATM cash point could remain in Oulton Broad if the branch is closed. He has also written to the other major banks asking if they will consider offering alternative banking facilities in the vicinity, or at the vacant site.

Mr Aldous has set-up a petition on his website at: www.peteraldous.com against the closure.

Commenting, Mr Aldous said:

“I was extremely disappointed to hear that HSBC intends to closure its Oulton Broad branch. This will have a negative impact on many living and working in the area, especially on those who have mobility difficulties and who will find it particularly difficult to travel to the nearest alternative in Lowestoft. I have set up an online petition against the closure and encourage as many people to visit my website and sign this, or to write to me ahead of my meeting with HSBC on the 7th October in order that I can best represent their views.”
