Waveney MP Peter Aldous today welcomed the news from the UK Payments Council that cheques will continue for as long as customers need them and the target for possible closure of the cheque clearing in 2018 has been cancelled.

After pressure from the Government, the Payments Council conducted a consultation on the future of cheques with over 600 different stakeholder organisations over the last 18 months. Evidence showed that many people wish to keep the cheque.

Mr Aldous said:

“This is excellent news for many people who like to keep track of their outgoings, or who simply find it most convenient to pay by cheque. But most importantly it is a way that many older and vulnerable people prefer to make payments.”
