Waveney MP Peter Aldous will visit the Digital Switchover Roadshow in Beccles on 30 September to find out what local people think about the big change to TV. Peter wants to ensure that all residents are aware of the switchover and that those most vulnerable know where to get help should they need it.

Switchover will see analogue TV channels turned off and Freeview services boosted to reach virtually all homes. Thousands of households across Norfolk and north Suffolk will be able to receive around 15 digital channels for the first time – up from just four or five on analogue TV today.

Viewers across the Waveney constituency will switch to digital television in two stages on 9 and 23 November. Constituents can check which channels are available at their address and their options for going digital at digitaluk.co.uk.

Mr Aldous said:

“It will be excellent for viewers in Waveney to have more choice of channels to choose from, but it is important everyone is aware what is happening and that those most vulnerable people get the help they need to receive the new service.”

Digital UK is the independent body leading the process and communicating with viewers.

It works closely with local charities and the Switchover Help Scheme which provides practical help to convert one TV to digital for people who are aged 75 and over, eligible for certain disability benefits, registered blind or partially sighted or living in care homes.

People qualifying for the Help Scheme will be able to have one TV converted to digital, a demonstration of how the equipment works and a number to call while they get used to things. The scheme costs £40 but if they’re eligible and also on income-related benefits, the help will be free. Everyone eligible will be contacted automatically ahead of switchover and invited to take up the offer.
