Waveney MP Peter Aldous is writing to Minister for Local Government, Grant Shapps MP to promote Lowestoft’s bid to become a Portas Pilot town.

The Government is offering towns the opportunity to become pilot areas to test the 'Town Team' approach encouraging local partnerships and consortiums to come up with innovative ideas of their own about how to transform their local high street.

The Government will fund 12 pilots, worth up to about £100,000 each. The money will be awarded to partnerships that demonstrate the best fit with the selection criteria.

The Portas review was published on 13 December 2011. It set out what Mary Portas thought had led to the decline of the high street and made 28 recommendations about what could be done to breathe life back into them.

Mr Aldous said:

“I am delighted to be part of the Town Team which is submitting the Bid. They have put together a carefully thought through set of proposals that both address the challenges that Lowestoft faces and set out an exciting vision for the future. Lowestoft has a great story to tell and being a Portas Pilot would provide an ideal opportunity to put local innovative ideas into practice that will create jobs and promote the town centre as a shopping and leisure destination.”
