Waveney MP Peter Aldous today commented on the announcement in the Chancellors Autumn Statement that the Fuel Duty rise of 3p scheduled for January will be scrapped not just postponed.

Aldous has been campaigning since elected in May 2010 to ensure the Chancellor is fully aware of the impact of Fuel Duty on local businesses and families. Peter has consistently argued that many people in towns and villages across Waveney have no alternative but to use their cars both to get to work and to access public services.

Last week Peter continued his campaign writing to the Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Sajid Javid MP, urging him to scrap the 3p increase in the rate of Fuel Duty proposed for January 2013.
Peter meet with Terry Seaman of Terry Seaman Transport of Redisham near Beccles on Saturday to discuss the impact of high fuel prices on his business [see letter].

Mr Seaman told Peter that between February 1998 and November 2012 the cost of diesel to his business has increased by just over 132% from 49.28p per litre to 114.5p per litre. As a percentage of turnover this is a rise of 28.42% in 2001 to 37.43% this year.

Fuel duty has not risen since January 2011 when it was raised by 0.76p per litre. It was then cut by 1p in March 2011 and ever since planned increases have been postponed.

This week Peter Aldous was named MP of the week by Petrolpromise.com who, congratulating Mr Aldous on his campaigning work said:
“Our hero this week is Peter Aldous (pictured), MP for Waveney. Mr Aldous has been campaigning hard for cheaper petrol and diesel prices, not just in the run-up to this week's autumn statement from the Treasury, but now for nearly THREE YEARS or more.”

Peter Aldous, commenting, said:
“I am very pleased that the planned rise in fuel duty in January has been scrapped. The Chancellor has listened to hard working families and businesses such as those in Waveney who will be relieved not to have to face this additional tax burden. I would like to thank Waveney constituents for their evidence which has helped me make a strong case to the Chancellor, along with other MPs, against a Fuel Duty rise.”
