Floods

Waveney MP Peter Aldous this week highlighted the significant impact that last week’s storm surge has had on Lowestoft and many other coastal communities and secures a Commons debate on the subject for Wednesday December 18.

On Wednesday Mr Aldous met Owen Paterson, Secretary of State for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs to inform him of the extent of the flood damage to homes and businesses in Lowestoft. A large number of people have had their homes seriously damaged, lost their possessions and will not be able to return to them for many months. Last weekend, Peter saw first hand evidence how badly businesses have been hit..

Mr Aldous is urging for action to be taken so that Lowestoft and other coastal towns are better prepared to combat rising sea levels, which mean that such events will occur more frequently in the future.

Mr Aldous said:“I am very much aware of the extensive damage that many homes and businesses have suffered in Lowestoft. I am concerned that floods of this kind could make it more difficult to attract the investment needed to create jobs unless we learn the lessons from such events and carry out the necessary investment in coastal defences.”

Mr Aldous will be pursuing this issue further and has secured an Adjournment Debate on coastal flooding in Waveney on Wednesday 18th December. He is also encouraging people affected by the floods in the Waveney area to contact him should they have any specific concerns.
