Aldous welcomes investment from Fair Share Trust

Waveney MP Peter Aldous welcomes the investment that the Fair Share Trust has successfully made in the Waveney area over the past 10 years.

In 2003, the Big Lottery Fund noticed that certain parts of the UK were not receiving ‘fair’ amounts of funding because they lacked the resources or experience to put together successful funding applications. The Fair Share Trust was created when it injected £50 million into a trust to target those areas that were the least advantaged. Waveney has been a great beneficiary of these funds.

UK Community Foundations was appointed as the Trustee and has delivered the Fair Share Trust by working with its members and other local partners or so-called Local Agents. In the Waveney area, Suffolk ACRE was the local agent who, working with a panel made up of local people and in consultation with the local community, identified key gaps in the area and the outcomes they wished to achieve with the funding.

Fair Share Trust was not just about giving grants. The processes were about empowering communities to take ownership and actively drive the change. Waveney received £881,183 enabling the area to make improvements and leverage further investment.

Across the whole programme an additional £25 million was leveraged, amounting to half the original funding. Areas have also been able to build their capacity, support local organisations to become more sustainable, improve the liveability of the area and enhance their social capital.

In Waveney the project was able to make some significant achievements, including leveraging an extra £330,418 and funding the Yard Project - Pride in our Road, which worked with young people and volunteers to improve the local environment. The Dreamworx Project was also created, aimed at early youth intervention.

Peter Aldous said:

“This investment is fantastic news for Waveney and I commend all those who were involved in the project, which will be vital to improving the living environment of local communities in the area.”

People in the Waveney area have had the opportunity to evaluate the success of the project, which you can find out more on their webpage at:- http://fstimpact.org.uk/waveney
