Energy Sector

Waveney MP Peter Aldous last week asked the Government what steps are being taken to support people who choose to pursue a career in engineering and build on the work being done by Lowestoft College.

In Oral Questions to the Minister of State for Skills and Enterprise, Matthew Hancock, Mr Aldous asked the Minister for an outline of the work that the Government is doing to increase the number of engineers to work in the energy sector in Suffolk and Norfolk.

The Minister gave his support to Lowestoft College, which he visited last year with Mr Aldous. He emphasised the importance of the college for promoting engineering and training to the offshore industry and affirmed that the Government would do everything it can to support it.

Lowestoft College offers a range of courses designed to equip engineers with the practical skills, knowledge and understanding required for jobs in local maritime, offshore and energy industries. It is committed to the delivery of first class training to seafarers, offshore and energy personnel.

Mr Aldous said:

“The importance of engineering to the nuclear, renewables and oil and gas sectors should not be underestimated. Lowestoft College does fantastic work to train engineers and the Government should build on this in light of the need for greater numbers of engineers in the Waveney area as the energy sector develops over the next few years.”
