Lowestoft flood scheme investment

Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne has today confirmed the Lowestoft Flood Risk Management Scheme is included in the Government’s flood defence investment programme – along with two local schemes.
The project is at an early stage, but initial allocation of Government funding of £7 million is in place, enabling vital pre-construction work to get underway.
Lowestoft was badly affected by the North Sea storm surge last winter. This scheme will ensure that the town is better protected against the threats posed by future storms, with over 800 households set to benefit. Once complete, the project will bring benefits of over £75 million to the local economy.
Peter Aldous, Conservative Member of Parliament for Waveney, has campaigned hard for improvements to flood defences in Lowestoft, highlighting in Parliament how badly affected Lowestoft was by the storms last winter.
George Osborne said:
“Thanks to our long term economic plan, we can invest in the future infrastructure that the UK needs, including flood defences.
“East Anglia was badly hit last winter by the storm surge. Protecting against events like these and investing against flood risk across the UK is vital – and Peter Aldous has been a strong local champion for Lowestoft.
“That is why I am today announcing that Lowestoft is included in our six year investment programme – and I pay tribute to Peter Aldous for his tireless campaigning.
“This scheme will protect 800 households, and make a lasting difference to the homes and businesses in Lowestoft”.
Peter Aldous MP said:
“I’m absolutely delighted that the Chancellor has included Lowestoft in the Investment Plan. I have seen the impact that flooding has had on Lowestoft and it is great news that the Government is making sure local communities are getting the support they need to protect them against future floods.
“The Lowestoft Flood Risk Management scheme is absolutely essential for businesses and hardworking people in and around Lowestoft, providing them with security and peace of mind from the threat posed by flooding.”
