Peter Aldous calls for legislation to prevent towns being left without a bank branch or free-to-use ATM

2nd July 2019

Peter Aldous raises the problems facing traders and residents of Bungay which has had no bank branch or free-to-use ATM since May and calls for legislation to reverse this regressive trend.

21. The town of Bungay has been without a bank branch and a free-to-use 24/7 town centre ATM since last May. That is causing serious challenges for traders, the elderly and those managing on a tight budget. Will the Minister put in place a regulatory framework to reverse this regressive trend? [911695]

I acknowledge the difficult situation that my hon. Friend has in Bungay. The Government-established Payment Systems Regulator is closely monitoring developments in ATM provision and, as I said, there are mechanisms in place to intervene. I am very happy to meet him to discuss the application of those to the situation in Bungay.
