Aldous welcomes Government action to tackle metal theft

Waveney MP Peter Aldous welcomes a new law which will reform the scrap metal industry and tackle the scourge of metal theft.

The Scrap Metal Dealers Bill, a Private Member’s Bill introduced by Richard Ottaway, this week passed its Third Reading in the House of Lords, the final stage before Royal Assent and the Bill becoming law. The Bill will reform the outdated rules governing the scrap metal industry, creating a stricter, locally administered, licence regime. It contains provisions to prevent the trade in stolen metal and gives the police and local authorities the power to close down unlicensed dealers.

Mr Aldous said:

“I very much welcome this Bill, which will reform the scrap metal industry and tighten the regulation on underhand dealings of scrap metal. The previous legislation had for too long allowed rogue traders to operate and the law will be vital to cracking down on illegal scrap metal dealing in and around Waveney.”
