Last week Waveney MP Peter Aldous welcomed Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon to the Constituency to discuss coastal erosion.

Mr Benyon was visiting the Norfolk and Suffolk coast and first stopped at Corton where he discussed coastal erosion with experts from Waveney District Council.

Later Mr Aldous introduced the Minister to David Watson and Mark Aspinall, Directors of 4NRG, who presented the Minister with an innovative method of combating coastal erosions whilst generating renewable energy.

4NRG has developed a number of prototype devices for combining the combating of coastal erosion and the generation of electricity into a single device. These devices aim to remove much of the energy from tidal flow and waves (creating electricity), reducing its speed. This allows sediment to drop out of suspension onto the sea floor and build up sand banks to create first line protection for the coast.

Mr Aldous said:

“It was a pleasure to welcome the Minister to the Waveney area and to introduce him to some of the areas many innovative business people. Coastal erosion presents a huge challenge to many living in seaside towns and, whilst these are currently just prototypes, it is encouraging to see local businesses innovating with the aim of reducing coastal erosion.”

Mark Aspinall said:

“We were pleased to present the Minister with this important new way of dealing with coastal erosion in the area. This system is innovative, will help reduce coastal erosion whilst generating renewable electricity.”
