Aldous welcomes Government funding support to Lowestoft College

Waveney MP Peter Aldous has this week welcomed the Government’s grant to Lowestoft College to carry out improvements to their buildings.

Lowestoft College has received £2.8 million from the Skills Funding Agency to support the £3.9 million investment project, which is due to take place over the next two years. The Enhanced Renewal Grant Phase 3 proposal submitted by Lowestoft College has the objective of modernising and updating facilities at the college to in turn boost jobs and growth in the local community.

This phase of the project will provide new engineering laboratories, [which will complement the work carried out in 2010], a new area for learners with learning difficulties and disabilities and greater insulation to the tower block to improve energy conservation and continue the College’s work on carbon reduction.

The grant is part of the Government’s new skills strategy, ‘Rigour and Responsiveness in Skills’, which aims to help people to reach their potential by making funding available to 46 colleges across England. The Autumn Statement published on 5 December 2012 increased to £550 million the capital funding available for investment in colleges in greatest need and those with the potential to support growth in the areas they serve.

Mr Aldous said:

“Lowestoft College is doing fantastic work with employers to provide people with the skills that they need to secure long term attractive jobs.

This funding opportunity will play a key role in helping attract business to Lowestoft and the Waveney area. New and improved facilities will make a real difference to the learning experience that students receive at the College and will help promote greater participation by businesses, particularly in the energy and maritime sectors. ”

The target for completion of the project at Lowestoft College is September 2015.
