Waveney MP Peter Aldous is in discussion with Suffolk County Council, Waveney District Council and the Highways Agency over County Council plans to end school crossing patrols in Suffolk.

Mr Aldous met Mrs Lian Shepherd, the school crossing patrol officer who is running a campaign in Lowestoft against the County Councils proposal to discontinue this service, to discuss her concerns.

Mr Aldous has written to Suffolk County Council asking for clarification on:

  • whether safety audits been carried out of the 16 crossings in the Waveney area.

  • what arrangements have been put in place to address any concerns arising.

  • whether the Council can help other organisations or volunteers run patrols.

In his email to the Highways Agency, Mr Aldous asks for an update on their work to install a crossing on the busy Yarmouth Road trunk road.

Mr Aldous said:

“Whilst clearly Suffolk County Council has some extremely difficult funding decisions to make, I would like to see that all safety issues have been taken into consideration before the final decision is made to end school crossing patrols. I am therefore writing to them to ascertain what safety assessments have been carried out in advance of this decision and to ask what considerations the Council has made for alternative organisations or individuals running these crossings."
