Aldous welcomes Transport Minister for opening of Lowestoft Bus-Rail Interchange

Transport Minister Stephen Hammond was in Lowestoft on Monday and formally opened the new Bus-Rail Interchange at the station. Whilst he was in town, Waveney MP Peter Aldous, Suffolk County Council Leader, Mark Bee, transport portfolio holder of the County Council, Graham Newman and Deputy Leader of Waveney District Council, Stephen Ardley, outlined to him the other work which is being done to improve transport links both to and around Lowestoft as part of the Lowestoft Transport and Infrastructure Prospectus.

This includes the upgrading of the A47 along which Mr Hammond subsequently travelled meeting other MPs along the way and the need to improve accessibility around the town, over Lake Lothing and at the Oulton Broad North railway station level crossing. Mr Hammond requested further information on these projects and agreed to work with all parties to provide the transport system that is needed to bring jobs to the area.

Peter Aldous MP commented:

“I was delighted to welcome Stephen Hammond to Lowestoft, both to open the new station interchange and also to provide him with further information about the other schemes we are promoting that will upgrade the transport network around the town.

“It was an extremely useful meeting; he was supportive of our plans and we agreed to work together to progress matters forward.”

Graham Newman, Cabinet Member for Roads and Transport at Suffolk County Council, said:

“This transport interchange is a significant piece of the jigsaw to give Lowestoft a more integrated public transport offer – and it has transformed the landscape at this end of Denmark Road. It’s all part of the County Council’s plan to offer realistic alternatives to the private car for short, in-town journeys – thus reducing congestion and air pollution. At the same time, we are working on other schemes to provide Lowestoft with a truly 21st century transport network.”

Stephen Ardley, Deputy Leader of Waveney District Council:

“It was a pleasure to show off the improvements of Lowestoft Town Centre to the Minister and have the chance to speak of future developments in the area. I also took the opportunity to discuss and lobby for a third bridge crossing.”
