A14 Tolling Proposals

Suffolk MPs today met the Prime Minister to discuss the A14 improvement scheme.
Six of the seven County MPs attended including Peter Aldous, Therese Coffey, Ben Gummer, David Ruffley, Tim Yeo and Matt Hancock (Dan Poulter had Ministerial duties in the Chamber).
Whilst pressing the need for the essential improvements, MPs outlined wide concerns from businesses and residents that the A14 should be improved but that a toll should not be the only scheme to be singled out for the road, with proposals effectively removing the existing A14 road.
Peter Aldous said:
“The meeting was extremely useful in providing the opportunity to relay the concerns of both my constituents and businesses in and around the Suffolk area.
“Although improvements to the A14 are long overdue, a toll would be detrimental to the local economy as the high cost of travelling in Suffolk would dissuade businesses from investing in the region.
“I am pleased that the Prime Minister has given his assurances that he will discuss the matter further with the Chancellor in light of the issues raised at the meeting and I shall continue to press the Treasury, Department of Transport and the Highway Agency to reconsider the proposals.”
