Environmental Protection UK (EPUK) is calling on communities in Waveney to get together to reduce noise for Noise Action Week 2011. The national environmental charity is promoting community action on noise pollution affecting our neighbourhoods, from early morning DIY to late night music.

Noise Action Week (23rd to 27th May) is an annual initiative organised by Environmental Protection UK, a national charity that provides expert policy analysis and advice on air quality, land quality, waste and noise and their effects on people and communities in terms of a wide range of issues including public health, planning, transport, energy and climate.

Waveney MP Peter Aldous said:
“I welcome Noise Action Week and hope it will raise awareness in Waveney about neighbourhood noise and the solutions available to tackle it. It gives everyone involved in managing noise problems the opportunity to focus on the difficulties excessive noise can cause for us all - at home, at work, at study and at leisure.”

During Noise Action Week everybody is urged to:

  • Consider the noise they make and the effect it has on others

  • Consider the noises that disturb them

  • Use practical solutions to everyday noise problems (See EPUK’s website for more information

Noise can cause disruption and distress to everyone - at home, at leisure, at work and at study. A 2009 survey1 found that a third of people questioned became stressed due to traffic noise and over 90% of people wanted to protect quiet areas. These findings were supported by government research2 this year that showed people value tranquil spaces near their homes, with almost 20% of people believing they live in noisy environments.
