Waveney MP Peter Aldous this week wrote to Jeremy Wright MP, the new Minister for Prisons and Rehabilitation, inviting him to visit HMP Blundeston.

This follows the publication on 25th September of the Independent Monitoring Board’s (IMB) Annual Report on the performance of the prison.

Mr Aldous commends the work of the Governor and the prison staff and he has highlighted the need for increased Government investment in the prison.

He has written to Mr Wright with the following observations:-

  • HMP Blundeston is a high performing prison
-An improvement plan was implemented in 12 months instead of the predicted 24 months.
-The prison was awarded the ‘Elton Trophy’ for best workshop.
-18 prisoners nearing the end of their sentences have been carrying out innovative rehabilitation work in the local community.
-The proportion of prisoners from East Anglia has been increased.

  • HMP Blundeston requires increased investment
-Despite the fact that improvement work to some of the roofs, the heating system, the healthcare facility and Independent Drug Treatment Service has taken place recently, work is needed to improve the sanitation arrangements in wings A, B, C and D.
-Improvements to procurement arrangements for building contracts are required to ensure that works are carried out efficiently and on time and provide good value for money.
-Resources are required so that the good and innovative work on rehabilitation can continue.

Commenting on the position, Mr Aldous said:

“Blundeston’s overall performance is as good as it has been for a long time and credit must go to the Governor and all the staff for their hard and innovative work. It is important that they receive appropriate support so that they can build on their achievements and I’m keen that the Minister should see the position for himself.”
