Following the Secretary of State’s report from the Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels, Peter Aldous calls on him to help ensure that in future quota reallocation the under-10s are not compromised by not having kept records.

Peter Aldous (Waveney) (Con): I, too, congratulate the Minister on his work in the negotiations before Christmas and over the past two and a half years on behalf of the under-10 metre fleet. There is concern that in future work on the reallocation of quota, the under-10s will be compromised by not having kept records. Will he confirm that he will work with the industry to address that concern?

Richard Benyon: I hope my hon. Friend would concede that I am on record as having faced criticism from some quarters for reallocating quota to the under-10 metre sector. I strongly believe that fishing opportunity is a national resource, and this rather bizarre business is about the allocation of that national resource. I firmly believe that the under-10 metre sector is important socially as well as economically, and I will continue to do what I can to make its life better.
