Peter Aldous: Waveney can be an energy hub and it is important that the Government makes the necessary investment, building on the Orbis Energy Centre so as to attract companies to Lowestoft.

There have been three events in recent weeks that reinforce the message that Waveney and Suffolk have an important role to play in supplying the nations future energy needs. Firstly Oil and Gas UK met in Norwich to look at ways of supporting companies in the southern gas basin, secondly the Pushing Offshore Wind Energy Regions (POWER) conference in Lowestoft highlighted opportunities offered by new wind farm developments and finally Suffolk County Council endorsed an energy strategy that could lead to a new nuclear power station at Sizewell.

Peter Aldous commented:
"The nation needs a mixed energy policy, promoting a wide variety of sources, including renewables, nuclear, oil and gas. With so much uncertainty in the world it is vital that long term decisions are made now to increase our self-sufficiency in energy. It is also vital that we reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Waveney can be an energy hub and it is important that the Government makes the necessary investment, building on the Orbis Energy Centre so as to attract companies to Lowestoft".

The announcement that it will not be possible to take motor cycle tests in Lowestoft from the beginning of 2008 has been condemned by Peter Aldous, Waveney's Conservative Parliamentary Candidate.

"This is a bad decision and I hope it isn't the thin end of the wedge for other driving tests" said Mr Aldous, who took his driving test in Lowestoft in 1980.

"I hope that the Driving Standards Agency keep their word and the centre at Rishton House remains open. Driving to Norwich will increase the cost of lessons and add more traffic on to the roads at a time we should be seeking to avoid making unnecessary journeys"

The opening of St Pancras International Station on 14th November 2007 will be a good thing for Waveney, according to Peter Aldous, Waveney's Conservative Parliamentary Candidate.

"This is good news and it will make the Continent more accessible to those living and working in Waveney. However this brings in to focus the need for the Beccles Loop to improve the service from Lowestoft. Unfortunately the Transport Green Paper published in the summer gives no encouragement that the Government recognize its importance. For me the Beccles Loop is a top priority"
